Take a look at a few symptoms-

  • Water Loss Confirming that the pool loses water is step 1. To determine wether the loss is caused by evaporation or a leak is simple. Apply a bucket test to the pool and the answer is in your results. See below for test instructions.
  • Liners Typically a liner pool has a liner related leak and not usually plumbing. Visual confirmation of a leak would appear as a tear or rip in the liner.
  • Air Bubbles Water pumps and pool pumps are designed to be sealed and free of air. Introduction of air will cause bubbling and if large enough failure to prime the pump.
  • Wet Ground Areas surrounding the pool that are damp and saturated constantly indicate a leak nearby. Some signs include pool decks shifting and even cracking.

Bucket Testing 

Step 1- Bring the pool water to normal level. Fill a 5-gallon bucket with pool water to about two-thirds from the top.

Step 2- Place the bucket on the first or second step of the pool. Ensure the bucket is immersed in the pool at least five inches.

Step 3- Mark the water level inside the bucket.

Step 4- Shut off the pump and mark pool water level on the outside of the bucket.

Step 5- Resume normal pool pump operation.After 24 hours, compare the two water levels. If the pool water (outside mark) goes down more than the bucket’s water level, there is probably a leak. If levels are the same, only evaporation has occurred.
